We had some pretty dangerous stretches of road in New Guinea too. There was this one area called the Markham pass, which was this thin, winding pass through the mountains on the way to the coast. Groups of men would set up roadblocks and rob/rape/kill anyone who stopped. It wasn't a constant threat, but the authorities recommended that anyone traveling that road carry a weapon and not stop for anything (even if you have to run someone down!) It was pretty intense on a few occasions.
